Dear Friend:

We are happy and excited to announce this years
Fifth  “Health & Art” Mexicanos Unidos Annual Event. This will be held Sunday, August 27 from 1pm-5pm in el Barrio and we want you to be part of this important event.

Every year, Mexicanos Unidos organizes an artistic festival with the purpose of providing HIV/AIDS education to the Mexican community through the use of arts.  The festival includes an art exhibit, Mexican folk dances, Mexican food and HIV testing.  Additionally, we will also make presentations on HIV/AIDS, and other health related topics and a variety of Mexican speakers. The activity is held in East Harlem, but Mexicans/Latinos from all over New York City attend and it’s free. This year, we will also be celebrating the fifth anniversary of Mexicanos Unidos. (You can see here some pictures of a past event: www.mexicanosunidos.org/ArteYSalud2003.html)

This annual effort is all-volunteer driven. It takes a lot of time to plan, organize, and make it successful each year. Of course, it also takes money. We have relied on many generous organizations, companies and individuals to assist us, and we hope that we can rely on you to help us this year!

Mexicanos Unidos has been providing HIV/AIDS advocacy, education, referrals, workshops and help for the Mexican community, including the LGTB community and people living with HIV/AIDS for five years.

Mexicans are the third largest immigrant group in New York City – and the fastest growing.  Please consider a cost effective advertisement in our event program that will be seen and read by many hundreds of culturally aware and interested Mexican individuals and families.

Take advantage of this opportunity. Prices are very affordable and include on-stage mention including services offered, a website text listing through the day of the event and full page ad sponsors will have a table to display your organization/business information. HIV/AIDS in NYC

New York City remains the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S. More than 100,000 New Yorkers are living with HIV, but thousands don’t know they’re infected. New York City has the highest AIDS case rate in the country, with more AIDS cases than Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Washington DC combined. HIV is the 3rd leading cause of death below age 65 in New York City. HIV is also the health problem with the largest racial disparity; 80% of new AIDS diagnoses and deaths are among African Americans and Hispanics. Prevention, testing, and treatment programs are being expanded, but more must be done _NYCDH.

The rate of new HIV infections and other sexually transmitted diseases continues to increase an issue particularly crucial to people of color. Anti-gay initiatives are on the ballot in many states. Misinformation about sexuality and abstinence-only information leave many people behind. Those facts make our event more crucial than ever before.
